A day

“It isn't the mountains ahead to climb that wear you out; it's the pebble in your shoe. ” - Muhammad Ali [Cassius Clay]

Today was a day for miniature new beginnings for me. Small steps back into my daily routine, which I’ve managed to fall off track of this last month.

This morning I went for my first run in three weeks. I walked about ½ of it but I did go, a small achievement in goal to get a bit more active. I was blessed with no rain, it pelted rain here all night last night but broke for a bit this morning.

This afternoon I lit the torch for the first time in what feels like months! I’ve been metalsmithing more than torching lately but I miss glass, I spent most of the time playing with a custom request for blue florals on a silvered ivory base. A bit of a challenge. Then I played with my two favorite things, silvered glass and clear. I made some twisties out of Kalypso and encased them heavily in clear, I could spend hours doing this!

Read a good book later this afternoon, and headed outside in the dark to feed the horses. I love that when I head out to the back field 75% of the time Redman is peeking at me through the gate. He’s a tall horse but for some reason he likes to stoop down and look through the gate. Usually Indy is locate by the nearest pile of food and Eazy is snoozing behind them both. Daily horse care is something that makes me feel all is right in the world. Heading back into the house my best buddy Snoopy (the cat) is sitting on the stairs waiting for me.

Dinner is made, maybe we’ll watch a movie tonight and listen to the rain fall.

Studio Tour

The studio tour went well. A little less traffic than I expected but all in all I was pretty happy with how things went. I finally got a challenge piece finished I've been struggling with for a while now, the results of which will be posted here on friday!

Snow day in Pt Townsend

I really liked this picture of the dock at Fort Warden.

Fort Warden Beach

Don't think we need to worry about Tsunami's.

Point Hudson in the snow sure is pretty.

Downtown Port Townsend, it was very quiet. The roads were not really even plowed, very serene and pretty.

Thanksgiving

“Let us be grateful to people who make us happy - they are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom.” - Marcel Proust

Tonight I had the pleasure of having a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner at Whit and Andrea’s in Pt Townsend. I’ve not ever been in the US for Thanksgiving and it really was a great day. I got a chance to visit with friends old and new, and had a yummy thanksgiving meal with some new dished I am going to have to try myself at home. Nothing makes a day better than, laughs and love.

Hoping for snow

It's a gorgeous day here in Pt Townsend but there is no snow. There is snow at home in Victoria, so I'm sulking. I love snow, I'm looking forward to the forecast cold winter and getting some sledding time in and maybe trying skijoring with Indy. I'm doing my snow dance today, hoping I can pull some snow from Victoria way down to Pt Townsend.

Sillyness

Yesterday Andrea, Anne and I went to Ikea and man was it fun! We laughed, joked, shopped, ate (ice cream at Coldstone) and generally had a good time. Living on an Island can get a make you feel a bit isolated at times and it's been really nice to connect with friends and have so much fun!

Insane

“A good friend is a connection to life, a tie to the past, a road to the future, the key to sanity in a totally insane world.” - Lois Wyse

I am heading out of town tomorrow to visit good friends! My world always seems a little insane. One of our geldings has cut a decent size cut on the side of his face, I swear they can tell when I want to go away. He’s on penicillin and should be just fine. But dealing with that whilst trying to pack is a bit more chaos than I planned for.

I am looking forward to getting some solid visiting time in, maybe some time in Andrea’s studio, and just plain old relaxing.

Time and space

This is truly where I want to be right now. we're having a wind storm here and some pelting rain. I'd much rather be holed up in a cabin in the snow. To all you snow haters, I apologize but I am waiting and praying for snow. The time change makes the world seem a bit dark to me this time of year.

I'm reading a book called Creative Time & Space, making room for making art. My sister loaned it to me and I think I may have to buy a copy. It's got a lot of interesting and useful tips for full time artists. I think we all struggle with time, productivity, creativity and keeping your joy. If I get only one good tip out of the whole book it'll be worth it, it's a very interesting read.

School House Studio

A quick post to thank all the friends, family and customers who came to our School House Studio "Bring a friend" event saturday. I had a wonderful time! I'm really enjoying being a part of a co - op style studio. My two studio mates Jennifer and Chiarina make it a lot of fun!

More boro!

I'm really enjoying playing with boro! I've always loved the etherial look it has. This new set is in my etsy, Cherries Jubilee!

Challenge of color

I am participating in The Challenge Of Color. Erin Prais Hintz is hosting this first ever color challenge on her blog. I've been given the following paint chip.

I've got the challenge to create a piece of jewelry using this color palette. Of course first I'll be wanting to make beads in that color palette. I'm excited and of course a bit nervous I won't get everything done on time. The big reveal is Dec 3rd!

In Erin's blog post she asked us the following questions.

Are you excited or nervous about the paint chip palettes I have sent you? I'm very excited! The colors are great and really "my kinda" colors!

Are you be willing to be open to the challenge and see where it takes you? Yes! I'm planning to make several bead sets so I can go where my muse takes me.

What do you hope to gain from participating in this color challenge? I hope to branch outside my comfort zone a bit. Maybe trying some more color packed beads, maybe some different shapes.

Featured Artist Cindy Holsclaw

Featured Artist

Cindy Holsclaw – Bead Origami, San Franscisco CA

Cindy’s intricate work often makes me wonder how people can create such unique pieces out of such tiny beads! Her seed beaded beads just blow my mind! I can’t even imagine the hours that go into these, and I’d need a magnifying glass just to find the seed beads! My favorite piece of her is the Sea Green Beaded Earrings.

http://www.etsy.com/listing/48071823/handcrafted-sea-green-beaded-earrings

I’m a huge fan or sea green or turquoise green and these astonish me that they are one, so small. Two, a perfect match! Read her interview below to find out a bit more about this weeks featured artist.

How long have you been working in your medium?

I’ve dabbled in beading since I was a child, but I became seriously involved in beadweaving about four years ago. Since then it has been and continues to be my primary craft.

What drew you to this medium?

Now that I look back on it, I was doing a lot of cross stitch at the time and I had the idea of translating cross stitch patterns into beadwork, using either a loom or off-loom techniques. After a little bit of research into the beadweaving world, it wasn’t long until I discovered that the geometric origami forms that I so loved could also be made with beads. I was immediately hooked.

What is your favorite thing about your art?

I like how so many different kinds of beads can be woven into geometric objects. I generally work with even, regularly-shaped beads including all shapes and sizes of Japanese seed beads, Czech glass, and Swarovski crystals, but I like trying to incorporate stones and freshwater pearls into my pieces as well. I’d say that my pieces are as much engineering projects as they are art projects, because so many technical factors go into creating a stable, sturdy, yet pleasing geometric object. It’s like piecing together a puzzle, and when it works it’s very satisfying.

What's your favorite piece?

That’s a tough one, because it constantly changing. Certainly my most ambitious project to date was the necklace I created for my wedding a few months ago. I used crystals and tons of freshwater pearls to create a layered necklace with seven beaded bead charms, plus matching earrings. I usually don’t get the chance to wear very fancy jewelry, so I took the opportunity to go all out.

Think on it

“Passively listening to gossip or negative talk is implied agreement.” - Scott Hardy

Think on this, how often do you stand by and do nothing? I believe by doing nothing you agree that what's happening is ok. What do you think?
